The Secret Community Garden in the Lower East Side grew from collective action led by R M Sánchez Camus. Formed to resist urban development, it became a living artwork of care, ecology, and community renewal.
In 2011, amid sweeping austerity and budget cuts, I collaborated with students at Buckinghamshire New University to paint a mural that opened a speech bubble for their voices. Under pressure from funding cuts across teaching and research, this wall became a living protest. A place for reflection, dissent, and communal expression in those turbulent years.
